Efficient Street Lighting with Renewable Energy

Street lights are an essential feature of communities of all sizes. In the UK, the first electrically lit streetlight was an incandescent bulb fixture on Mosley Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in February, 1879. Since then, electric streetlights have become a common sight in populated areas all over the world.

Today, as governing bodies and the public worry about unneccesary electricity generation, we are developing up-to-date energy solutions by transforming existing systems. Adapting existing infrastructures to turn street lights into a renewable energy source would be beneficial to both governments and everyday citizens. Local authorities would receive more electricity and a feed-in-tariff to reinvest in future energy saving schemes, whilst citizens – who cover the cost of the services provided – would see a reduction in energy-related taxes.

As the danger of climate change escalates, we can look to today’s resources to find environmental solutions for the future.
