Wind Power
UK Wind Speed Database
Before choosing a wind turbine, finding the annual wind speed for your site can give you a basic indicator of expected wind performance for the area.
For an accurate figure, however, you should consult trained specialists who can assess structural and statistical data on-site. Please view our consulting section if you require an in-depth review of your site.
HOW TO USE THE DATABASE
1. Ordnance Survey Grid Reference
The database requires a six-character grid reference for your area. If you have this information, please proceed to the DTI/BIS link in Part 2. If you do not know your grid reference, follow the instructions below.
FIND GRID REFERENCE BY POSTCODE
Please click the link to Street Map and enter your postcode.
You will require the 'LR' Value, supplied in the format of two letters and two sets of three digits; for example, 'AB123456'.
Before using the database you will need to remove the last digit of each set of three and remove any spaces.
For our example, 'AB1245'.
2. Using the DTI Wind Speed Database:
Please click the link to DTI Wind Speed database and follow the link.
Select your region and enter your six-character reference retrieved from Step 1 (for example, ‘AB1245’), and then click the Find Wind Data button to retrieve your average annual wind speed.
